Why I’m Making a Change

Hey guys!

People always jokingly, or not so jokingly, say “New Year, New Me!” which I always replied to with “Shut up you’re the same person and the flip of a calendar doesn’t change you”. And although I still believe that a flip of a calendar and getting drunk at midnight doesn’t change a person, I believe this particular year we have all been given an opportunity to really improve ourselves if we want to.

You see, it’s a new decade. This only happens every 10 years, obviously. So if there was ever a time to seize the day and turn your life around, it’s this Winter of 2020. And although I am a hater of the New Year and New Years resolutions, I decided to take a leap into this new decade and try to change my habits. And I think it’s working…

In college I gained a good amount of weight, which honestly sucks to admit on the internet. And it sucks even more when all my friends can share clothing and wear whatever they want and I’m too self conscious to go shopping with people. Which is why this new decade is so important to me. For 2020, I decided to go (mostly) plant based and work out every single day. If you know anything about me you’re probably laughing in my face, and to be honest sometimes I think I’m a little crazy. But I feel SO GOOD guys. I’m a lover of red meat and chocolate and red wine (savory deep flavors for the win) however, these things don’t always make me feel my best. And I really just want to feel good again. So although I’m not screaming “I’M A VEGAN!” when I go out to eat with friends (we know those people and we kind of hate those people) and I’ll cheat every now and then, really consciously thinking about what I’m eating and making sure I fuel my body with the best food I can make has really made me feel much more in control. I’m learning how to be more creative with my recipes, which is awesome because I love to cook. And I’m curbing my chocolate cravings with a small piece of dark chocolate WHICH IS ACTUALLY WORKING?! All in all, eating healthy and being conscious of what I’m eating makes me feel healthy and great, which is all I’m really searching for.

I also mentioned I’m working out. In high school I played sports and was in awesome shape. Then I came to college and like many people, I got way too comfortable with snacks for dinner and drinking sugary drinks all the time. And this caught up to my 22 year old body in ways it wasn’t affecting my 17 year old self. But how could I start working out and hold myself accountable? I’ve tried before and fell out of the routine time and time again. Then a commercial for Peloton Digital came on my TV. We’ve all seen the commercial for the Bike of the woman who’s husband gives her a Peloton Bike and we all felt a little uncomfortable for sure. However she said she didn’t realize how it would change her life. And although I don’t have the Bike and am not in a creepy relationship like her own, Peloton has for sure changed my life. The app has workouts from yoga to running to bootcamp to meditations, and it has held me ACCOUNTABLE because it show’s me all the workouts I’ve done and I can see how I’m progressing with higher level classes. It motivates me to get off my ass and get it done, which I’ve never been as motivated to do as I am now. I coupled this with my new Apple Watch and now I can’t stop closing my rings and advancing to my milestones on Peloton. I feel a lot more active and able now. I feel like I can really push myself and I’m not scared of going a little bit faster or working a little bit harder, which was holding me back in all aspects of my life before. Working out is just as good for my body as it is for my mental.

I know this “New Years” post has came pretty late, it’s the middle of February for God’s sake. But I wanted to be able to show everyone that you CAN do it and you CAN make a change AT ANY TIME! The New Year is just a good excuse, but it’s in the dog days of Winter that you can prove to yourself that you are capable and worthy to change and good decisions. I’m proving this to myself every day and I’ve never felt more worthy or more motivated than I do right now. Yes, some days are a struggle. And some days I say I don’t care and I make chicken for dinner (which honestly isn’t even unhealthy) or I eat cheez-its. The glory is all in the balance and the conscious decisions, which I’m making more and more of every day.

I want to challenge you to not a New Years Resolution, but simply a Resolution. A resolution that going forward, not simply in 2020 or in this new decade, you will make decisions that make you feel good and make you be the person you want to be. That’s really what life is, right?
