How-To Be a New Intern

I am currently doing an internship at Glamourpuss NYC. Glamourpuss is a company located on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The mission statement of Glamourpuss is “to establish a new kind of luxury: vibrant, playful, versatile and full of life”. Who wouldn’t want to work there?!

Going into your first day as an intern can be super nerve-wracking. I’m a really nervous person, so going to my first day was keeping me up at night. However leaving the office that day, I felt amazing. I realized that I can do anything I set my mind to, even if there are roadblocks in my way. There really was nothing to be scared of. But sometimes we can’t help but be scared so here are a few tips for your first day.

Know Your Trains

I live on Long Island so I take the LIRR to and from work. I also take two different subway lines to get to the Upper East Side. My advice to you is to give your commute a dry run before your first day. On a Monday, or whatever day of the week you’re meant to start your job, drive to the train station and see if there is going to be traffic. Also, see if there will be parking!!! I thought there would be parking and there wasn’t so I had to park at a CVS and my dad had to come to move my car later. It was a nightmare and I ended up having to switch train stations to a station that had parking at it. Also, practice taking the subway if you need to take one! I went to the city with my friend Arthur and he helped me navigate it so on my first day, I knew exactly where to go.

Plan Your Outfit The Night Before

Waking up and knowing exactly what I was going to wear really helped ease the stress I had in the morning. I did not have to open my closet and think while I was already freaking out about my first day. I wore black pompom pants from J. Crew and a boutique blouse. I matched this with mules from Free People. I carried my Henri Bendel jet-setter with all the essentials in it. I brought my iPhone, my laptop, my laptop charger, an umbrella, a granola bar, a water bottle, a scrunchie, and my wallet.

Make Sure You Bring Your Confidence

It is so easy to be nervous going into a new experience. I struggle a lot with being very scared and anxious before I do anything new. When I was younger I was terrified of the first day of school every single year. So starting this new internship scared me! I was scared that I was not smart enough or skilled enough or that the people I worked with would not like me or would be mean. None of that happened. On my first day, my boss Courtney and the other woman that works here Hilary could not be more welcoming and kind! And on this day I helped fix a lot of the listings on the website which was a huge help to them. The company you are working for hired an intern so they could have more help in the office so they are more than pleased to have you there. And don’t forget that they hired you because they believe in you! So make sure when you pack your lunch you pack an extra dose of confidence because you are so ready for this!

Expect The Unexpected

Being an intern means you are working to gain experience. This experience can (and should!) be in a wide range of areas so you get to try everything! At my internship, I’ve done everything from walk the Brooklyn Bridge with our hat designer to fishing inventory out of an overflowing storage unit in the Bronx. The first day is no exception! Go into your new internship willing to learn and gain new experiences. Always be down to do anything. If you show your boss that you want to learn and you want to help in any way possible, it will pay off. And have fun! These crazy experiences you get from working in a fast-paced environment can be crazy and stressful, but if you’re working in a field you really care about, the unexpected will be the most fun challenges you will face.

Try To Get To Know The People You Work With

Glamourpuss is a small company, so I got the opportunity to talk to everyone that works there a lot. Also, the ladies I work with are a lot older than me. However, by getting to know them and being friendly with them on the first day, we all ended up having a lot of fun together despite them being my mom’s age! The women I work with are awesome, and the people you are going to work with are probably awesome too. Open yourself up to a conversation with them and you will probably end up making some great friends.

I hope you take this post with you to your first day at your new internship! You are going to crush it. You earned this and now it is time to show them what you got!

XOXO

Kristin
